What Are No-See-Ums
Have you noticed small itchy welts all over your body but can’t determine the culprit? Do you feel a painful bite and then can’t find the source? No-see-ums, also known as biting midges, are the smallest biting insect. These no-see-ums are so minuscule, they can attack without being detected. Females bite and inject their saliva under the skin. The skin becomes irritated and the spot of the bite turns into a large welt. Female no-see-ums will seek out blood from humans, pets, livestock, and wild animals to start the production of their eggs. Impregnated females will seek out areas with water to lay their eggs and hatch their young. No-see-ums don’t usually stray far from their home so getting rid of these biting insects can have a lasting effect.
Though no-see-ums can be more difficult to get rid of than mosquitoes due to their small size, there are effective ways to prevent them from invading your home. Here are some of the most effective methods of preventing no-see-ums infestations:
- CO2 Traps — Much like mosquitoes, no-see-ums are attracted to the CO2 emitted from these traps. DynaTrap has a wide selection of traps for indoor and outdoor use. CO2 attracts the insects close enough for them to be sucked into the trap by its quiet vacuum fan. Once trapped, the insects die from dehydration and will remain in the cage even when the trap is turned off.
- Mesh Screens — Since no-see-ums are so small, normal window and door screens are not able to keep them out. These small biting insects have the ability to fit through the holes in most screens. Investing in a smaller-mesh screen can help keep out no-see-ums out of your house.
- Cold Temperatures — If you have biting midges in your home, you might want to turn up your air conditioner. These insects cannot withstand cold temperatures and low humidity. Though your electricity bill may rise, you can be relieved from the pests invading your home.
- Dress Properly — If you know you are going to be in an area that attracts no-see-ums, be proactive. Dress properly for the occasion by wearing long sleeve shirts, pants, and decrease the exposed surface area of your skin. If you want further protection, wear a hat with netting and apply repellent to any exposed areas.
