Mosquito Species in the United States

With over 3,000 species in the world, it is no wonder why mosquitoes are one of the most common problematic pests. In North America, 176 different mosquitoes can be found. Not only are mosquitoes known for their aggravating bites but also for spreading mosquito-borne diseases. The diseases they spread differ from species to species, some being more common spreaders, including Culex, Aedes, and Anopheles species.

Yellow Fever Mosquito

This Aedes species of mosquito was credited with the name due to the transmission of yellow fever during the Spanish-American war. The yellow fever mosquito can be found in coastal cities along the Southern states of the United States. Females will lay eggs in birdbaths, flowerpots, and other similar containers. Eggs that are flooded after rain tend to hatch in a shorter amount of time. The population has been declining since the Asian tiger mosquito arrived in its regions.

Anopheles Mosquito

Anopheles Mosquitoes are the primary vector of Malaria and often referred to as the Malaria mosquito. The thorax, abdomen, and head are usually dark brown or black in color. Instead of being even with the surrounding surface, the Malaria mosquito’s stomach points upward. Anopheles mosquitoes can be found almost anywhere in the world (except Antarctica). Malaria mosquitoes can lay their eggs in a wide range of locations. Females can lay thousands of eggs in their lifespan causing this species to be one of the most common.

Asian Tiger Mosquito

Like the Yellow Fever mosquito, the Asian Tiger Mosquito will breed in standing water such as birdbaths and flowerpots. Its population grows rapidly when its eggs are exposed to rain and the proper temperature, causing them to hatch quicker. The Asian tiger mosquitoes can be identified by their white stripes on the abdomen, thorax, and legs. Unlike other types of mosquitoes, the female Asian tiger mosquito will bite in the daytime. Males of this species do not bite. The bite of an Asian tiger mosquito is known to transmit diseases such as equine encephalitis, Cache Valley virus, and dengue fever.

House Mosquito

House mosquitoes are the most common mosquitoes in the United States. House mosquitoes belong to the Culex species group and can be found in Northern, Eastern, and Southern regions of the United States. House mosquitoes can be identified by their light brown coloring with white stripes. This mosquito species is attracted to polluted standing water. Commonly drawn to storm drains and birdbaths, mosquitoes will use these sites to breed. Female mosquitoes can lay from 50 to 400 eggs which take around 10 to 14 days to hatch. Like many species of mosquitoes, Culex mosquitoes can transmit diseases and viruses to humans.
